Interior design is an art and science of improving the interior of a structure to make it aesthetically pleasing to the people who are using the room. An interior designer is a person who designs, studies, coordinates, and delivers such improvement projects. An interior designer works with architects, engineers, and building contractors to develop and create spaces that are functional as well as pleasing to the eye. Interior design can be applied in many different settings, including private homes, public buildings, schools, hospitals, office buildings, government facilities, and shopping malls.
Interior design courses prepare students to enter the profession in various fields. Many colleges and universities offer interior design courses, and some even offer certificate programs in this field. Interior design courses are usually grouped into two categories – one on designing the basic structure of the facility itself and the other on furnishing the interiors of the facility. The interior designers who work in public facilities are usually responsible for planning and designing the entire facility. These professionals must plan out the layout and color schemes of the interior and then work with architects, engineers, and other professionals to carry out the project.
The process of designing the facility usually begins with determining what the purpose of the building is. Then the functional objectives of the building are sketched out. After these objectives have been defined, the interior designers work on bringing together all the design elements of the project. This includes lighting, textures, finishes, and other functional components.
One of the main components of an interior designing project is the study of the furniture and other furnishings of the space. The furniture can include carpets, upholstered chairs, tables, couches, beds, benches, storage units, walls, flooring, windows, and other forms of fixtures and fittings. In terms of the interior designers working on the furnishing part of the project, there are two types they can fall into. There are those who specialize in furniture designs and those who only deal with interior decorating.
A person interested in becoming a professional interior designer must first undergo formal training. There are a number of different ways to go about receiving formal training. Many colleges offer diplomas in Interior Design, which may be acquired in an evening or a full day program. More advanced degrees can also be obtained through programs that are part of an architectural college, a technical school, or a community college.
After making it through the formal training phase, a person who wishes to pursue a career in interior designing will need to pass several entrance exams. These entrance exams measure an applicant’s communication skills, decision-making skills, and aesthetic sensibility. Generally, if an applicant has good communication skills, and is eager to learn more about interior designing, they will do very well in their initial interview. If not, there will be a lot of people applying for a position. The best way to get hired after this step is to have solid experience.
